FAQ's

We get so many questions that we sometimes haven't had the chance/time to answer properly so I've added a new section up here at the top. That's where we'll fill up with answers to the most common questions we receive from you. Here's a few of the latest ones:

Hey, what's up with the new boat? You haven't showed any pics lately? Peter.

Will tell you all about it in a while...

Taru,
First I want to give you all the credit in the world for hopping on a boat with Alex and starting the next chapter in your lives to tour the world. I enjoy your blog immensely while I sit in my cubical at work, dreaming to someday do what you are doing. I have to ask though. How do you and Alex manage to get a long as well as you do? Dating a sailor myself, and having hopes of doing what you two are doing someday, I'd love to know how you remain so devoted and patient with one another. Safe Travels through Hurricane Season! -Ali

Well, we don't get along so well all of the time. Most of the times perhaps, but as we both have quite some temperament and passion in our blood, it tend to spark around us quite often. I would be lying if I said we never wanted to kill each other. Thinking of it, I could almost say that we argue about something minor almost every day. Not big stuff of course, just a small argument that dissolves in a couple of minutes. There have also been moments (not very many thankfully) when I have wanted to jump off the boat in nearest harbor and take a flight back home to Europe and there have been times when Alex nearly have dumped me overboard of frustration but we still hang in there. We are both strong believers of that a good fight is good and refreshing for every relationship every once in a while, as long as you still are willing to work towards the same goals in life. Both of us are also pretty good at "forgiving" each other and what could be seen as a major argument one second, can be turned into happy times and peace the next. But no, not even us who look to be so in love are always getting along and I don't think it's a bad thing at all. I could tell you a story about the time when I jumped off the boat, naked, in the middle of the night in a peaceful anchorage, just to get rid of the never-ending conversation we had started, but I'll save that for another time... It's a great challenge we've got here, after all. To be with only one person for such an extended time. And I believe that you will have to be really convinced and in peace with what you're about to execute and who you're doing it with, to be able to take on such a life changing project with another person.

Hello Alex & Taru!
We have stumbled across your blog and love it; we now follow all of your new posts and it's great to see what other cruisers are doing.... I was wondering how you were able to get sponsored? If you have any advice or method, way of approaching companies that worked for you (..) I would love to hear about it. We have a blog started and a site still in the works but are reaching out to friends for help and advice... Also, did you both have a lot of sailing experience before embarking? Well, below is our site, please check it out. We are also on facebook; let's keep in touch! Thanks in advance for your response! Best wishes, Lindsay & Matthew

Hi Lindsay and Matthew, thank you for your email and I apologize for the late reply. We get a lot of emails regarding sponsoring and I regret that I haven't replied to these questions earlier. Simply put, which can be applied on any project/business idea: Find your way to go, create a clear vision of what you will do, how to achieve it, what way to go. Make sure to be unique in some way, do not be only a copy of everyone else, find something that makes you stand out from the rest. Companies and brands are always looking for new ways to market their products and will most probably not choose you as partner if your project is just like everyone else. You also need to believe in your ideas, treat your project like a baby, work hard on it and prove that you take this serious. Because it is not before you self believe in your ideas to the max that you can convince others to do so too. You must also almost certainly be able to guarantee that you will bring new clients, more publicity to the company, that your idea will generate something for the brand that will sponsor you. With a blog, your weekly/monthly traffic is important to mention. The more readers you got, the greater the chance to be interesting for the company you approach. If the larger, more commercial brands doesn't reply on your inquiry or doesn't show interest in your ideas, try the smaller ones in the same field. Perhaps you can find companies that are brand new, new businesses are always looking for getting their products out on the market and those are often great to approach. When you have everything clear, send the company an email, tell them who you are, what you're about to do. Tell them why you'd like to get sponsored by their brand and what they could gain from sponsoring your project. Make it simple but clear. Shorten the email to the most relevant and add a link to your website. If you already have some other sponsors you should mention these too, the first one is always a bit tricky but as soon as you have a reference, it should get easier. I could go on forever about this but these are the basics I believe. Good luck with your plans and travels!

Your second question about sailing experience: Alex has been sailing all his life, he's been racing when he was younger and he is an extremely accomplished and experienced sailor from who I myself have learnt everything I know about sailing. I didn't know anything before I met him for two years ago but Alex brought me out to the sea quite immediately after we met. We have now sailed more than 10.000 nautical miles together during these past two years and we both look very much forward to continue our travels for many years to come.

Some plans

Photo from the volcanic mountains of Pitons, St Lucia
Looking forward to change the somewhat metropolitan and busy SXM to a week of nature, sea and relaxation. Plan is to spend next week in Tobago Cays (will we really get there, finally?!) and the other Grenadines, perhaps even Barbados after that if the sail there isn't too much of a challenge against the swell, wind direction and the current.

Tuesday thoughts

Some things that makes me smile this Tuesday morning:

* Will finally meet my sister in next week down South.

* We've recently finished a couple of smaller projects and I've finalized a few articles.

* Several friends from Europe are planned to come and visit us here later this year.

* Our friends Camilla and Adam have decided to become full-time sailors/live aboards and are now selling their gorgeous flat in Sweden to continue their adventures around the world by boat. Love when people act on their dreams of making something different. Particularly when it's about moving from land to the sea.

* My fellow blogger/cruising friend Brittany is having an addition to the family with her Scott. There's a little sailor baby in the making. Exciting changes ahead. Almost can't wait for the day when we get our own one/s.

* Both Alex and me are healthy (except for the fact that we've been eating/drinking way too much lately). We're pretty content with what we have achieved thus far. We got loads of plans and projects for the future and we are more or less free to do whatever we want with our life. I keep reminding myself of the fact that this life is ours. We are free to envision life as large as we dare and create whatever we wish as long as we have the physical possibility to do so. Isn't that grand when you think about it? Everything is possible. All you need is passion, faith, will power, a bit of planning and good determination.

Sunday lunch

We were invited to our friend's yacht in Porto Cupecoy yesterday for a delightful Sunday lunch. A perfect break from the nerve racking motion of the lagoon where the storm felt much more present than in the peaceful Porto Cupecoy. How wonderful isn't it to have someone else cooking for you every once in a while? Thank you for the kind hospitality, Reggie!

Let it storm

The tropical storm was not as strong as expected but still enough to remind us of how incredibly small we human beings are on this place called earth. It is a reminder of that the nature doesn't care all that much wether we live or die. We are just a part of the life we created for ourselves and we'll stay around only for as long as we manage to survive. Human life and the raw nature feels brilliantly synchronized and in harmony with one another at times, incomprehensibly incompatible at others.

Bring it on

Doesn't it look like we're just about to ride a hurricane? No? Well we're ready either way. Looks like tropical storm Maria could be throwing in some hurricane winds to us tomorrow with storm beginning already tonight so we have not much else to do than prepare our dear Caos as much as we can. We've just tied up to a mooring, threw out an anchor, secured all possible flying stuff off the deck and that should be fine to begin with. This is supposed to be the strongest tropical storm in our Caribbean stay so far. Perhaps even a hurricane if we are really damn unlucky. But like they say; there's always a first time for everything.

Wanna get out on the sea

To stay on land, especially on a happening island like SXM, is wonderful but we can't wait for the storm to pass so we can get out sailing again. Much to discover also outside of this lagoon..

Randoms

Mueve la cintura

Lots of salsa, bachata & other ritmos latinos going on here on this island.. here's a good one to get you in the mood.

Bar of the night

If you're ever around in St Martin you should check out our friend Guy's beach bar by Maho Beach. It's a simple bar made out of a boat, perfectly located right at the end of the airport runway. Great experience, good ambiance and amazing views where the planes land and the sun beautifully sets in the Caribbean sea.

Mullet Bay

last pic is from Maho Beach. Bikini from Babajaan
Alex got a couple of smaller waves from the swell of hurricane Katia on Saturday afternoon on Mullet bay and there was that other bay which was even better with some nice barrels (no pics from there unfortunately due to the late hour in which we finally found the place). Apparently there was even better surf on the NE on Sunday which we unfortunately missed out on. Shall check the place out next time there's a good swell coming.

Back in business

Hello!

We took a weekend off from boat work, writing, the blog and everything else and instead we've been devouring the beauty of this island. I mean seriously, I don't think I could've ever imagined here to be so beautiful. The beaches, the ambiance, the water, aah, the water! It is way better than most other places we've seen thus far on the islands below in the Lesser Antilles. And all those amazing rocks by the shore, loving the change of view. This week has been all about surfing (yes me too), celebrating Alex's birthday, swimming, drinking Jagermeister with our crazy yacht broker and some other friends we've made, watching beautiful sun setting in the sea and salsa dancing, to top it all up in good style. Yeah we could definitely imagine to live here in the future, but you know how it is, we fall in love with every second place we sail to so no need to worry about us settling down in the nearest future. Happy to death though that this place is above all our expectations since we will spend quite some time here this fall. More about everything a bit later. Hope you all had a good weekend.

More photos from our travels

If you wish to see what's going in our lives when we're not posting here on the blog, friend us on Facebook. That's also where we answer questions and easier can have a dialogue with our readers and fans. See you there..

Now and forever more
