Dreams and preparations
If you have time you really will want to drive up to Washington State, we have some amazing waters and a very large boating community! The San Juan Islands are amazing!
Toronto? So cool.. that's where hubby and I are.
The Outer Banks of North Carolina are a sailers dream
The US southwest is better in autumn or spring when the temperature is not so hot. If you get a chance to see the Rocky mountains in Colorado, be careful of altitude sickness coming from sea level. If you go through Utah don't miss Zion National Park, it is amazing. Enjoy!
Nooooo, you guys are going to the wrong side, come to the Salish sea in Washington :)
now we're talking... a real trip! damn if I am getting bored reading about you guys being stagnant in one caribbean place after another I can only imagine how a proper "road" trip must excite you.
Awesome. I'll buy you dinner when you get to Colorado.
Alex & Taru if & when you stop in Miami I would love to meet you both, I am a young old sailor & have my own boat, would love to set a welcoming party to escort you into Miami!
You and Alex would love one of my favorite stomping grounds here in San Diego, alongside everything else here in beautiful SD - Costa Brava (Pacific Beach) A few blocks from the beach, all authentic Spanish tapas with real characters for owners/bartenders and the Sangre de Toro flows like water!
Last year we completed a 6 month road trip across the US in our VW Camper Van. You may be interested in looking at some of our stops along the way to get some ideas. My wife covered it in her blog (http://freerangekinder.blogspot.com), starting here: http://freerangekinder.blogspot.com/2011/09/let-insanity-begin.html
A few places I recommend that you haven't already mentioned:
- Moab, UT (canyonlands and arches NP)
- Jackson, WY (grand teton and yellowston NP)
- Seattle, WA (rainier, olympic and north cascades NP)
- Camden, ME (acadia NP)
Its a big country and its impossible to see it all, but the above are our favorites after lots of wandering.
How about Chicago or Indy? Dinner on our family, great steak restaurants.
If you come to Toronto area, I could take you sailing on Lake Ontario in my Shark!
Hello, hello Alex and Taru,
Please visit us in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. We're on a world tour too with our boat currently in Bocas, Panama after sailing down from Maine. We hope to inch towards the South Pacific next season. This summer however we live in Portsmouth a short walk from a lovely harbor and in the center of this small city's energy, also right across the bridge from Maine. We have a guest room, amazing shower, a real full kitchen, and a wonderful farmer's market on Saturdays.
Taru....
Things of interest if you make it to Nova Scotia

Alex and Taru,
Glad to hear you are making it to the states. Why don't you come up the Chesapeake bay and visit us in Annapolis, home of the US Naval Academy. So much history! Alex, maybe we can set up a meeting with famed yacht designer and local resident Bruce Farr. Dinner is on me and my girlfriend , plus we will have a free slip for you.
Regards,
Sean
be sure to travel Route 66 through the west it is way better than the major highways. colorado is most likely the best for your "dude" ranch.
Be sure to visit the Washington D.C, area if you get a chance. There's plenty to see and do and you can access the area by water. Stop and see George Washington's Mt. Vernon right on the water. If you get an auto consider driving the Lincoln Highway (Highway 30 from east coast to west coast. Anyplace you go you will be welcomed in the USA.
I will echo the joys of the Pcific Northwest and the Salish sea.
For a dude ranch experience you can't beat this place:

I grew up with one of the brothers and it is the real deal.
good luck traversing the US and Canada and not eating any meat.
suggest you suspend this vegan "phase" until you really need to eat berries and grass in the South Pacific.
Impossible to ignore a New York Sirloin steak while in New York.
Impossible I say!
Don't forget to visit Michigan, we have more coast line than Flordia- and guess what, no salt!
Charlevoix is a beautiful little town that is surrounded by vineyards and was just named "The second best yachting town in the world" by Yachting magazine- www.charlevoix.org
If you have never sailed on the great lakes it's a totally different experience than the ocean, and definitly worth the experience.
If you decide to make a pit stop up here we will be happy to take you out sailing on "the big lake"
Ooooh you're coming my way! If you pass through Charlotte let me know, would love to meet for coffee or offer some acupuncture if you'd like! You will LOVE Charleston. It's one of my most favorite cities in the world (I went to Uni there). PS Do you call your man monkey? That's what I call my hubby!
Ahh, a horse ranch! We have plenty of that here in Temecula, one hour North of San Diego. Let me know if you get this far and want to ride. We can ride through the Winery's. We have over 35 of them! Safe journey's!
Hello! Not to put a damper on your excitement-however, surely you're aware of the sometimes busy, Atlantic Hurricane season? Please take all the precautions...
If you get to North Carolina, the anchorage in Wrightsville Beach is lovely & sometimes the surf just across the street is pumping-which Alex would enjoy!
All the best...
I would love to meet you both. We have several horses we ride frequently. So if you come out west you should stop in. We have extra room and the food is great even if you don't eat meat. We live an hour south of glacier national park close to flathead lake. It's on the west side of Montana! Just email me if you get close I will take care of horseback ridding and room and board! It's the least I can do for all you have done to feed my dream!!!
Suggestions for Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach:
In Miami Beach, you can anchor at the base of the Collins Canal and then there is a place to tie up your dinghy both by the bus stop and the Publix grocery store. Definitely hit the Miami Beach Strip on a Friday or Saturday night.
In Fort Lauderdale, you can anchor in Lake Sylvia. Then dinghy to the public marina north by Las Olas bridge, or dinghy West to Southport Raw bar. You can tie up there for $10.00 but that is a credit at the raw bar as well.
In Palm Beach, a great place to anchor is near Peanut Island. Then dinghy to Sailfish Marina. Or head south a bit to Downtown West Palm. We like to anchor near the three public city docks and then tie up the dinghy at the city dock. Or just tie up the boat at the city dock. We prefer to anchor because then you can just dinghy back to the boat for the night which is already at anchor. Then the whole Clematis area is very cool especially on a Friday or Saturday night.
