By the way it is interesting to see that our world tour is the third most tracked tour in the world, according to SPOTWALLA's top ten trip list. /Taru
If that little battery eating bugger is runing of 8x AAA that makes is 12V in my math.
If that is the case, I would rig up a cable and run the thing of the boats supply and have done with it.
My prediction is you'll soon be the most tracked tour.
The battery requirement is silly. AAA batteries have a specified output, so any should work. The only difference you'll find is how long they last. I'm sure lithium batteries will last longer, but alkaline should work exactly the same, just for less time.
Hmm... a good seabird book might be just as difficult to find on this part of the Spanish coast as those elusive lithium batteries. Try this website (as I think you have 24/7 access on the boat). http://www.oceanwanderers.com/Seabird.Home.html
Following your trip with great interest - good luck

I'd say this is a marketing FUD, as you point out there is probably a nice cross marketing arrangement in place between the two companies.
Lithium based batteries have a very high energy density - which means they last longer for the same package size in simple terms, and can deliver higher current for energy intensive applications.
Energiser Ultimates are good batteries - but they remain disposable single use units - not good when supply source is difficult to track.
An option for this application may be the Sanyo Eneloop rechargable batteries. These are a Nickel Metal Hydride based technology, but has the ability to be used straight out of the box, and most significantly they do not lose charge when not in use like most other rechargable batteries do. They can also be charged from a solar based recharger if needed. Upfront cost for these batteries like any rechargable batteries is higher than disposable batteries but total cost over life is lower. And its also moderately better environmentally to use rechargeables over disposable.
Try having a read of this site: http://www.eneloop.info/home.html
And http://www.japantrendshop.com/eneloop-solar-charger-p-448.html.
Note this isn't a marine version, its just one that turned up with a little googling.
You should be able to buy a marine version of a NiMH solar charger off the net some where that will do the job.
Best Regards,
Peter
I agree with Peter, its also better to the environment the use of rechargeble batteries.
Rechargeable would appear to be the best option however most rechargables will no reach 1.5 volts only 1.2 max and will not hold that for long. If this device is volt sensitive it may cause problems, lithiums hold the volts longer.
If you can find some good quality rechargeables I would give them a try, the eneloop ones mentioned in a previous post woud be good,

HI,
I would also suggest what Nigel has been recommending.
Consider connecting it to your boat / service battery and imagine how much money your are going to save on batteries.
Best from the baltic coast,
Norbert.
Thanks a lot for all helpful advice! To recharge seems to be the best option for both our economy and the nature. Will try to get a hold on the Sanyo Eneloop version that Peter points out.
Please bear in mind that a lithium battery works at very low and high temperatures and an alkaline less. Lithium -40 till +60Celsius Alkaline -15 till +55Celsius. Shelf life lithium 15 years, alkaline 7 years. To check all of the details visit data.energizer.com
