...violence by narco-terrorist groups continues to affect some rural areas and large cities...
...Nevertheless, terrorist groups such as FARC, the National Liberation Army (ELN), and other criminal organizations continue to kidnap and hold civilians for ransom or as political bargaining chips. No one is immune from kidnapping on the basis of occupation, nationality, or other factors. Kidnapping in rural areas is of particular concern...
If you stop at Santa Marta on your way to Cartagena, I think you should visit La Casa del Farol. An amazing couple from Barcelona (!) owns this small, beautiful hotel and I believe thay even have a restaurant nowadays. I think you might share the passion to travelling as they have an amazing story themselves moving from traditional high-demanding jobs to another world and start a new way of living their lives.
I was just in Colombia in March and am actually about to leave in November for a sail from NYC to Colombia to live. Colombia is absolutely beautiful. We went to Taganga, Cartagena and Tolu along the Caribbean Coast. The fresh fruit juices are the best and the snorkeling is great. In Cartagena you could spend hours weaving in and out of the streets in the Old Town. So beautiful and plenty of great shopping.
Ahhhhh I LOVE Colombia, what a country! I'm a bit of a South American expert. If you ever need any help feel free to email me questions (AndiPerullo@aol.com).
Oh well, nästa gång.
I ADORE both Bonaire and Colombia.
Cartagena is relatively dangerous, yes, but if you are a smart traveller you will be fine.
In Cartagena be sure to check out the mud volcanoes/spas. And have a dip in the mud pools. They are truly divine.
I am not sure how long you plan to stay along the Colombian shores. A trip to Baranquilla is worth it. A beautiful city.
Como van a gozar en Latinoamérica! Y Colombia es fabulosa. Ojalá vengan a conocer Chile!!!
go to Medellin!!! Colombia is amazing

I was born on the island of bonaire and both my parents lived on the island for 15+ years! My mother was a master dive instructor there and knows many of the locals! I hope you have a tremendous time! xxx
Ditto re Bonaire. It was our favorite island. Most relaxed but with all the essentials. The whole island is a national park so you know they care about the environment. You can snorkel right from your boat or swim to shore and walk along the boardwalk into "town".
Customs and immigration are very relaxed too.
We spent two months in Curaçao getting ready for the big trip to San Blas islands non stop. Took us 3 1/2 days so was over quickly.
We had contingency plans for Columbia but decided to skip this tour. Maybe next time when things calm down.
Enjoy!
