Hey Mates
may I ask you the question, why Alex uses carbon to reinforcen the stringers? Glass would be a lot cheaper and I doubt, that a little carbon will have a big effect on the structure of the hull. The original hull is of glass right? I would appreciate if you could explain what led you to that decision.
Good vibes!
Hi Max,
Most of the reinforcing work done on Duende, such as at the transom, a few new added stringers and ribs and some new knees are done mainly with carbon because of the weight, size and stiffness. As all those added pieces rely only on physical bonding and are not part of, chemically bonded with, the original hull, he wanted to use something as stiff and light available and also save as much space as possible. Most people would probably go with fiberglass but as Alex has done a lot of experiments with different exotic fibers along the years, he decided that carbon would be the most appropriate. He also gets wholesale price on carbon.
