I couldn't give a shit if you work her illegally or not. I expect this is true of most of your readership. We don't want to see you get deported because you talked about it on the internet.
Loose lips sink ships.
I like your comment about the intolerance of US people (in general). They have only lived and traveled in the US. They don't speak a foreign language. They don't understand foreign cultures. But they try to impose their view of the world on the world. And they are judgemental about things they have never experienced themselves. I am sorry for you guys to have to experience this so quickly. I hope you do not get hung up too soon on this bothersome attitude. Once you have discounted for these political inadequacies you will find that Americans are quite nice and sociable. Comment from a German, educated in the US (Stanford), remembering times of tolerance and open mindedness, longing for the seventies. Best regards, Anonymous.
Ignore the negative comments. You are not an illegal alien that some people like to categorize. By renting the home, contributing to the local economy through expenditures, and not jumping on any of the social welfare programs you are not in the same category. Enjoy our country and it's people. I hope you have the opportunity to travel by car also and meet the populace.
Couldn't agree more about the rules and regulations in the US. We are a fear-driven people, fear generated by the media which is owned by the corporations who profit by the regulations.

Hi Alex and Taru, welcome to New England. I think you'll find that this part of the US least matches the description that "Anonymous!" gave (and yes, I have traveled all of the US and have spent 6-7 years of my life in various countries outside the US, so I'm not completely ignorant).
As for "best this", "best that" -- don't believe just TripAdvisor, because that's over-represented by out-of-towners. Regina was once good, but it's really not anywhere near the best pizza in town. Posto, Otto and Area 4 come immediately to mind as places that are much better. Ask a local. This is really the best time in New England for eating, what with all the summer produce still being around and the fall harvest coming. A lot of towns have weekly farmers' markets; maybe yours does.
There are small but lively groups of surfers, windsurfers and kiters in the area as well, and quite a lot of surprisingly good spots. Again, the autumn and winter months are great for surfing and windsurfing, but you'll soon need a wetsuit. Let me know if you want to meet some of the local windsurfing or kiting people.
Again, welcome.
you think the US is highly regulated, you should see Australia if you ever make it this far, going overseas for us is like being on day release from prison.
Have a great time and don't sweat the small stuff. I agree with your position on "anonymous" people. What are they afraid of? Its like replying to an empty room. Enjoy New England!
Hey Alex want to have a little fun at the end of Sept for a regatta on Buzzards Bay? I've got a boat that might need an extra hand.
Seriously what is wrong with people??? Ahhh I hate these stupid anonymous people! DELETE! The pizza looks delish!
"your government has made your country one of the most governed and bureaucratically controlled societies in the modern world, but why don't we all just chill out and realize most things aren't that serious after all"
LOVED that you said all of that, haha!!!
Totally agree, chill out a bit and mind your own business. So many people seem to have a problem, looking for a cause...
Thanks Scott for pizza tips, going to check them out.
Aquila: I didn't know Australia was that regulated?? Had imagined it to be pretty liberal and relaxed in fact. Looking forward to visit one day nonetheless.
That's the thing about traveling widely-- you experience all the variations of the way people and governments relate. As Europeans you've probably never encountered an imperial National Security State before. Take Colombia, with its forty year history of violencia-- even there the government has far less interest or ability to control and interfere with people's lives.
Americans have become a fearfull people, afraid to speak out and perhaps loose their jobs and be cast out on the street, afraid that they will lose their homes that have no equity value left, afraid that a minor illness will leave them bankrupted by outrageously inflated medical bills, and afraid that bad guys invented by their government will attack them at any minute.
But in the end people are just people. A few are evil, but most are worthwhile human beings. No different in the US than anywhere else. And it is that kind of friends who I hope will make your stay rewarding and enjoyable.
Just got back from the US actually and I cannot agree more with all of your sentiments (especially about the governed and bureaucratic). I don't look down on it, obviously we both enjoy the benefits there are to being in the US, land of convenience, but I do wonder if American citizens are aware of how different their worldview is from the rest of the world. Anyway, happy to see you enjoying the little things about land, I love those things too!
